Street in Kakopetria. The old village lies on the banks of a small river in the northern foothills of the Troodos mountains. The houses are built of stone below and wood for the upper storeys.

The Buyuk Khan, Nicosia.. The ‘great inn’ was built by Mustapha Pasha immediately after the invasion of the island in 1571 ‘for the benefit of foreigners’. The rooms are arranged round a courtyard in the middle of which is an octagonal mosque.

The gateway of the Serai, Nicosia is the last remaining construction of the Lusignan kings and later of the Venetian and Turkish governors, was demolished in 1904. The window is now at the Jeffrey Museum, Nicosia.

This is a typical house in the centre of Nicosia in the area of the dividing line. I drew this in the late 1980s on a return trip after the main project was finished.

Farm yard in Ayia Anna. A big oven is used for making bread and a smaller one for roasting.

Village of Ayios Elias, Karpas. The Karpas is the long narrow north-eastern peninsular. In this style of village house the arched verandah helps to cool the house, and offers a covered view of village life.

Makheras Monastery lies south of Nicosia on the northern slopes of Mt Kionia. It was founded in 1148.

Stavrovouni Monastery. Situated at the top of a precipitous rock, this monastery - 'the mountain of the Cross' - is said to have been founded by St Helena. The present building dates from the 19C.

An interesting house on the corner of Minos Chrysaliniotissa streets. Its unusual colours of yellow and blue and the shape of the windows show Venetian influence.
